make that impending lamitude

Followup to my brush with reportage. It turns out that this week's "Speaking out around the Island" topic is...

get ready for it

Who's your favorite president?

No, I'm not making this up; it really is that lame.

This smells of editorial clampdown, as in heaven forbid we actually ask an interesting, provocative question and actually risk offending people. And, of course, three of the six answers are "Ronald Reagan".

So what was that about liberal media bias, again?

(upper-crust accent): Not on MERCER ISLAND, silly fellow. What say we gather Biff and Muffy and go play some golf?

I just like making fun of the place. My parents owned some ridiculous house on Mercer Way with a huge yard, a boat launch and some variety of watercraft when I was a little kid. I regularly mock them about it.

I, of course, can't remember much about it other than the fact that the ducks would come onto the patio to bite me... oh, and I wore miniskirts with go-go boots.

But they would have been asking people for THIS issue LAST week. Because it comes out on Wednesdays.

Well, the actual, physical paper shows up in our mailbox on Wednesdays...

I think it's funny that Mercer Island has their own newspaper.

There's a whole family of these dorky little once-a-week papers. Usually for us the most interesting thing is the police report, because it's often hilarious to see what trivial sorts of things show up many weeks when there's nothing much to report. There are also occasionally things that bug me, like the guy whose gun collection was broken into and some were stolen, and he couldn't give a more accurate figure than "2 to 7." That mostly bugs me because... gah, you should have SOME CLUE how many guns you own, shouldn't you?

Some of them might still be under the couch cushions... he'd have to check to make sure.

I can answer that easily. Two.

P, on the other hand...
