I wonder if they've suddenly seen an upsurge in hits because of xkcd.
Anyway, I now know what most of southern Australia looks like (that one was basically impossible, but if you want to give it a try...)
answers!
Update: It is possible to get over 32000 points. (hm, am I not supposed to be using Google search?)

Geoguessr's own Twitter is silent on the issue of Googling vs just guessing; me, I give myself a certain limited amount of clicking around but if I can't find a clue fairly quickly, then I guess. (And I haven't bothered with translating Russian/Japanese yet.)

There was one I had that was a single panoramic view of a hillside in the middle of nowhere, just grass, trees, and snow and something that looked like castle ruins at the top of a hill. No text, no distinctive terrain. nothing. And because it was a singleton view, there was no way to walk around in street view to find any other clues in the neighboring views. Nothing at all to grab hold of,....
... except for the copyright notice with the photographer's name in the lower right corner. Google that, and you find the guy's online album, with the panorama in it, which then tells you where it was taken, and then you're done.
which is just stupid, but as far as I can tell it was the only way to solve that one.
